BBC One Sessions is a series of unique, intimate performances by some of the greatest legends and contemporary stars around. In this installment Elton John and his band are in concert at LSO St Luke's in Shoreditch, performing some of his most famous hits alongside songs from his latest album, The Captain and the Kid.

In 1970, the BBC broadcast the TV special, Elton John in Concert. The show featured impressive live renditions of songs that would go on to become classics from Elton’s music catalogue, including a version of ‘Burn Down The Mission’. The track is taken from the Tumbleweed Connection album, also released that same year.

With an introduction from his widow Dame Cleo Laine, this programme pays tribute to Sir John Dankworth, jazz musician, big band leader and composer for TV and film. Featuring a wide variety of performances from the BBC archive, it includes John playing saxophone in the company of his hero Duke Ellington from Monitor 1958, an appearance with his orchestra at the Royal Variety Performance 1962, classic tracks from the series Jazz 625 including John's band accompanying Cleo Laine, and Cleo and John's 2007 performance on Later with Jools Holland. Information captions give background details about the tunes played and John's illustrious career. John, who died in February 2010, was a pioneer of modern British jazz and an ambassador for all genres of British music.

Recorded as part of the Edinburgh Festival of Popular Music on 17th September 1976, 'Live at the Playhouse Theatre' gives fans an exhilarating view of Elton at the height of his '70s popularity, having just enjoyed his first UK #1 single with 'Don't Go Breaking My Heart.' This electrifying solo performance kicks off with Skyline Pigeon (taken from 'Empty Sky') before ending with a riotous version of 'Saturday Night's Alright (For Fighting)'. The setlist rips through classic after classic, including 'Rocket Man,' 'Daniel and 'Bennie and the Jets.' It was also the first time Elton performed 'Don't Go Breaking My Heart' solo. Climbing on his piano and stomping his way through this virtuoso performance, Elton leaves every ounce of himself on the stage, in a classic concert that was to be the last time he would perform a full show for another 7 months.
